The EVOO EG-LP5-BK is Walmart’s go at a gaming laptop, and it is surprisingly good for the price! (right now it’s on sale for $450 off, but it may just be their “sale” price) . They don’t build it themselves but they do sell it pretty exclusively which is interesting. Overall build looks nice, slim, and the specs are pretty decent too!
Nvidia GTX 1660 TI (6GB GDDR6)
Intel i7 9750H 2.6Ghz (4.5Ghz boost)
15.6″ 1920×1080 144Hz display
16GB DDR4 RAM
512GB NVMe SSD
What’s super interesting about this laptop is the storage. It comes with the 512GB NVMe SSD, there’s a second slot, AND there’s a slot for a 2.5″ SSD. Most newer, thin laptops don’t usually have that extra storage slot, but it’s nice if you’re converting over and want to have extra storage capacity without being too pricey.
Oh man. They did it. They put the webcam at the bottom of the screen. This has become such a pet peeve because you know there was a boardroom of people who gave the O.K. for this design. Obviously they never tested it and got on a video call with a camera that low.
As with most thin, powerful laptops, you’re going to have power issues. You can’t expect much in terms of battery, and the only info available is that it’s a 4 cell which is nice, but the total capacity is unknown. Expected use is less than 5 hours, so that’s technically correct which is the best kind of correct I suppose.
In a similar fashion, heat! Yes it’ll get hot, but there is quite a lot of ventilation on the bottom and the fact that it has a 1660 instead of 2060 is going to bring the temps down a bit. Keep it elevated if possible, and maybe bring down the voltage a bit on the GPU and CPU to help it along with heat management.
For under $1000, you’re looking at a decently spec’d machine, sleek visuals, and overall a great buy if you’re looking to do some pretty intensive gaming. You’re not going to get ultra settings at 144fps, but dropping to high settings will give you some smooth gaming, and what more could we want from a gaming laptop?
