Lenovo’s Legion Y545 (Model 81Q6000QUS) is the big brother of Lenovo’s Y540. Very similar in almost every way except a few. First, the screen has an upgraded 144Hz refresh rate, and is quite bright as well as accurate color wise.
The other difference goes to the graphics card. Upgrading from the GTX 1660Ti, it comes with a RTX2060. Not a huge upgrade (about 15% faster overall) but still decent.
So with the few noticeable upgrades, you’ll also be getting an upgrade in price. Not a bad deal if you were looking for a RTX2060 at a pretty low cost.
With Great Power, Comes…Great Heat
Yep. So with the upgraded GPU, you’re going to start running into higher heat levels than it’s little brother. The ventilation system is pretty well developed but the temps can still run quite high. If you’re running something like MSI Afterburner it makes it easy to monitor and control the temp if it gets uncomfortable. Propping it up at a slight angle and giving it space to breath will definitely make a difference.
Something that doesn’t really affect everyone, but it can be pretty annoying is the webcam. The webcam is UNDER the screen. So the only way to really see yourself is to awkwardly tilt the screen back and have the camera looking straight up your nose.
Just like the Y540, it’s a bit hefty. In fact slightly heftier at 5.17lbs. Honestly not a big difference but in the grand scheme of super ultra paper thin negative gravity laptops coming out these days, it’s good to know.
What do we love?
The screen is fantastic, the 512GB PCIe SSD is great, and there’s also room for a 2.5″ SSD or HDD if you wanted extra storage.
The fact that it has 2 SODIMM RAM slots is fantastic because it helps run anything you through at it really well. P.S. 2-8GB is faster than 1-16GB of RAM because you’re essentially doubling the speed the motherboard can access the RAM. (2666Mhz per stick, so a 2 stick will have 5332Mhz total speed)
The keyboard is nice being backlit. Nothing too special but it really is nice to have.
Right now it’s $500 off the original price at Walmart which is a really great deal and actually brings it down into the price range of the Y540 model. If you were looking something this size, with these specs and a quick 144Hz monitor, what are you waiting for?
Of course you can set a price alert below and we’ll notify you if the price drops, but I can’t see it dropping much further unless Walmart decides to have a special[er] deal on Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
